Few travel experiences are as magical — or as fleeting — as Japan in full bloom. Cherry blossom (sakura) season typically runs late March to mid-April, but the exact window shifts yearly and moves south to north.
Where and when
Tokyo and Kyoto usually peak from late March into early April. Northern Honshu and Hokkaido bloom weeks later, into late April and early May — useful if you can't travel at the classic time.
How to plan around an unpredictable bloom
We track the annual forecasts and build flexible, multi-city itineraries by bullet train, so if Kyoto peaks early you can chase the blossom elsewhere. Booking accommodation early is essential — this is Japan's busiest season.
Beyond the blossom
Even if you narrowly miss the peak, spring in Japan is glorious — mild weather, gardens in bloom and a country at its most celebratory. We always build in a backup plan.
